Third-generation Audi Q5 SUV range features sportier stance and taut proportions; with even sleeker second-generation Q5 Sportback offering a coupe silhouette.
Audi's familiar Singleframe grille sits higher and wider than before, flanked either side by functional air curtains for a striking front end.
Dynamic styling stretches the full length of both Q5 SUV and Q5 Sportback ranges, with prominent shoulder-line creating a sporty stance, simultaneously 'extending' the wheelbase visually.
Audi Q5 SUV retains classic proportions, while Q5 Sportback features a dynamically sloped roofline, with elegant rear window graphics and sharply angled C-pillars. Sculpted narrow light strips broaden the rear design on both models.
Sport specification features 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, while S Line and Edition 1 models boost those to 20- and 21-inch alloys respectively, the latter upgrading them to Audi Sport models.
Exterior colour options: Arkona White, Glacier White, Floret Silver, Volcano Grey, Mythos Black, Grenadine Red, Navarra Blue, Ultra Blue, District Green, Daytona Grey, and Sakhir Gold.
Interior design
Intended to provide a cozy ambience, the new Q5 SUV and Q5 Sportback's interior design is based around a 'Softwrap' concept, as well as a highly equipped cabin.
Extending from doors to doors, the 'Softwrap' uses high-quality materials on all fabric panels, complemented by high-gloss control areas. Fabric materials include Cascade textile - which is designed to look like wool and isn't dyed - and Dinamica - which offers the look and feel of suede but almost half of its make up is from recycled polyester.
Highlights of the standard specification include front heated sports seats in twin leather upholstery, black Softwrap dashboard with contrast stitching, three-zone climate control, and a two-spoke multi-function steering wheel with touch control and shift paddles.
S line trim adds electric adjustment to the front seats, a heated and electrically adjustable steering wheel, privacy glass, and 'S' logo embossed or stitched about the cabin.
Top-of-the-range Edition 1 specification offers comprehensive equipment levels including sports seats in Dinamica upholstery, and digital key - enabling access and start authorisation with a smartphone or smartwatch. It also includes the passenger MMI display.
Occupant & load space
Practicality has been a key focus for this generation of Q5 - both for the SUV and Sportback - with greater emphasis placed on this element than ever before.
Despite being visually sportier and more coupe-like, the Q5 Sportback concedes only five litres of load space when compared with the SUV variant. The Q5 Sportback offers 515 litres of seat-up load space, against the SUV's 520 litres; space when rear seats are folded sits at 1,415 litres and 1,473 litres for the Q5 SUV and Q5 Sportback respectively.
Increased interior space has been created thanks to a longer wheelbase and overall length, and greater width, resulting in a comfortable feeling of space with ample head and legroom.
A fully-adjustable rear seat is fitted in the new Q5 range, able to be moved lengthways and tilted, making for flexibility when carrying passengers, luggage, or both. The rear seat is also capable of seating three comfortably.
Cabin storage has been improved upon too, now with a larger compartment beneath the centre armrest, as well as numerous other smaller storage areas for everyday items.
Infotainment
'Human-centric' design ethos implemented in Q5 cabin, blending technology with intuitive controls.
Audi's high-powered 'Digital Stage' is the visual hub for the interior, incorporating driver and passenger MMI screens.
Incorporated into a single, free-standing curved OLED screen, the driver's instruments are housed within an 11.9-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit system, while other features are found within the 'central' 14.5-inch touch display.
Additionally on Edition 1 trims, a 10.9-inch MMI Passenger Display for front seat passengers is installed, set into the dashboard ahead of them, with Active Privacy Mode enabling passengers to use the infotainment system without disturbing the driver. It also allows them to assist with the driver's needs, for example, helping with navigation settings.
Fitted as standard, the high-specification MMI navigation plus infotainment system includes Audi Assistant (the integrated AI digital voice assistant), online map updates with 3D maps, smartphone integration, wireless smartphone charging, and integrated Audi app store and third-party apps.
Lighting technology
The Q5 family showcases Audi's continued work on lighting technology, inside and out. It features digital daytime running lights with LED technology at the front, and SQ5 Edition 1 models getting digital OLED rear lights.
Innovative second-generation digital OLED lights incorporate six panels, with a total of 266 segments that generate a new image several times a second, enabling an active digital light signature for greater clarity and safety.
Audi's rear lights 2.0 not only improves lighting design, but also makes communication with the vehicle's immediate surroundings (Car-to-X) possible, warning other road users of accidents and breakdowns. For example, the OLED real lights on Audi SQ5 models can, when necessary, display integrated warning symbols in critical driving situations.
At the front, the LED light technology features fifteen segments that can alter their brightness, with each individual segment capable of interacting in such a way that the overall appearance of the signature does not change its light intensity.
MHEV powertrains and PPC chassis
Audi's new Q5 SUV and Q5 Sportback ranges are powered by a pair of 2.0-litre MHEV plus engines from launch. Available with either TFSI petrol or TDI diesel units, both options produce 204PS.
All models fitted with a seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic automatic transmission and Audi's famed quattro all-wheel drive technology.
Audi's latest 'MHEV plus' 48-volt system boosts performance, while supporting a reduction in CO2 emissions compared to non-electrified engines. Plug-in hybrid TFSI e models will be available at a later date.
Engineers have focused on increased agility and comfort for new Q5 SUV and Q5 Sportback models, with improved suspension and steering configurations for conventionally-sprung variants. Only Audi SQ5 variants get adaptable air suspension system.
PPC platform designed to incorporate MHEV plus components, incorporating electric motors and battery, and allowing low-speed electric-only running.
